Time to put on the moderator hat for the first time in our new forum. What a milestone.
Fulminato i think you are naive. (o desperately try to defend your position as the only reasonable)
Fulminato first, there is the mysterious third party, you often forget them,
Fulminato the main problem is your arguments are lacking in solidity and you avoid to analyze some facts and scenarios going against your point of view.
Don't know if you realize this, but you are coming across pretty blunt, and sometimes seem to be stating unproven opinions/theories as fact without any hedging. Please try to focus on critiquing statements, and not making any insulting generalizations about the person making them. For example, if you must say something is naive, say it about the position - don't call him naive.
You could also be more explicit enumerating assumptions you see on either side when you invoke Occam's Razor repeatedly.
BurningHeretic To quote Sarai: "It's little more than a hunch, at this point. Deal with it, motherfucker." Or, heck. You could even call it a "Wild Speculation". But you're right. I should limit such fever-dreams to a thread where it's more appropriate to discuss such things. You seem pretty knowledgable, could you direct me to the appropriate thread for WILD SPECULATION?
Seriously, what do you want from me? I can't point to a specific event flag, you've got me there. I put forth a theory that I thought fairly readily explained everything I'd witnessed. A more tidy theory than anything you've put forth, I might add. And you've been shitting on it from minute one. Why the hostility? I'm having a cool time with everyone else I talk to here, even through disagreements (I hope). But you've been, just, a pill. This entire time.
Your sarcasm is based on the fact that this thread is marked as the Speculation Thread. But did you notice in the original post that it also says "Debate is welcome as long as it remains civil"? You met one criterion for posting here, in that you are speculating, but with this post you failed another criterion, that of civility. And you haven't given enough weight to debate being welcome! No one is forbidden to question your theories, so long as they're civil about it.
You believe you are "having a cool time with everyone else" and that Fulminato is hostile and "a pill". Have you considered that your responses from the beginning can be read as hostile, rather than cool? If you believed another user was being needlessly rude to you, your first response really should have been to address it calmly and try to deescalate. Instead, your first direct response to Fulminato makes an elaborate show of pretending he might honestly think you are referring to him as a type of fruit, or that Xestris is literal bullion. I don't believe you have given him much more reason to assume good faith from you than vice versa.
(In contrast to the peach thing, the Ralke reference was pretty funny.)
BurningHeretic Again, I did. And your dismissal of those points without actually addressing any of them doesn't exactly make you look good. Almost like you're avoiding some facts and scenarios that might go against your point of view. I've gathered that you can be somewhat dismissive of arguments from psychology, but maybe read up on "Projection".
As I said to Fulminato, please try to critique the arguments before the person. Readers can draw their own conclusions about whether persons posting here are individuals of good character, but I don't believe sweeping generalizations about others based on their posts in a video game speculation thread are appropriate, or appropriately rigorous for a character judgment.
BurningHeretic Yeah, see that? That's a bunch of time spent refuting a claim that no-one made. Not a good look, friend. Honestly make you come off as a bit naive. Maybe don't go casually insulting other people's intelligence while failing at basic reading and comprehension. English isn't your first language, I know. And it hurts to have it pointed out this abruptly, I know. Point is, you're the only one I'm this acerbic with on this forum. And that's solely because I'm reacting to, well, you. I don't want to be this kinda' person. I don't want to piss on someone because they speak English as a second language. But you keep talking down to people here and it's getting on my nerves.
Whether you choose to be acerbic with him says little about whether he deserves it. Doubly so because you don't have any particular reputation around here of being sweet and polite (because you don't have much of a reputation at all yet). This reads a bit confrontational, despite your stated desires.
Again, if you think Fulminato being ESL is relevant, perhaps that should give you more reason to try being sincere and straightforward about your concerns first, rather than engaging in sarcasm. After all, if you sincerely believe his reading comprehension is this bad, shouldn't you make it simple and plain to understand for him? This seems less interested in bridging the communication gap than using it tactically.
BurningHeretic And the ability to do that more-or-less requires one to either be a sociopath or a narcissist
OR
it requires one to condition their mind to be able to think like a narcissist or sociopath. It's not actually just a switch you can just flip on and off. Not for most people. That's the point I was trying to make. You seem to think that compartmentalization can just scale upwards into infinity but it doesn't. Not for most people. And if you can...Well, best not to follow that thought to it's conclusion.
Very, very out of line. There is no way you should actually think anyone posting here doesn't know what "or" means.
More importantly, let me state in the strongest possible terms that it is inexcusable and intellectually invalid to jump from a speculation about a character's psychology into thinking that the speculator must share whatever psychological peculiarities are under discussion or believe that they represent characteristics of the typical real person's mind. That is a poisonous way of thinking, it amounts to flaming, and I won't countenance it in this community in even small amounts.
To address your specific point, this is fiction and a fantasy setting with various mind magic. Typical limits of the human mind are out the window. The Anak was never human, and we have direct evidence of Incubus Kings like Simon controlling multiple bodies at once. You want to talk compartmentalization, well. But again, even if Fulminato were simply wrong about human psychology your response would still be unacceptable.
BurningHeretic Ah. You're a Warhammer 40K fan. Oh dear, and a diehard fan of that whole weird "Imperial Cult" thing. I now understand why you would accept it as perfectly normal for characters to have extremes of personality so overblown than they make comic book characters look like moral philosophers. That would explain why my arguments based on human psychology would fall on deaf ears. Thanks for clearing that up. Normally I'd try to make the argument that a storyline written by fans of miniature wargaming to fans of miniature wargaming for the purpose of facilitating miniature wargaming might not stand up to the closest scrutiny when viewed through any other lens but...
...Yeah, no. I don't have a means of even explaining my point to you in a way that you can even parse, let alone understand.
Even if we agree with your opinion of Warhammer, it is also not logical or okay to imply that someone who also enjoys less nuanced stories is therefore incapable of understanding or appreciating anything more nuanced. By this point in the post it just seems like flaming, and being kind of a snob.
